A 49-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a violent Mukurweini robbery where a charcoal vendor lost Sh200,000 at gunpoint.
The dramatic arrest follows a joint operation by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), including the Operations Action Team (OAT) and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB).
The suspect, identified as James Kanyi Gachara, is believed to have masterminded the daring charcoal vendor robbery that has shocked residents of Mukurweini Sub-County, Nyeri.
Police said the arrest came after days of surveillance and intelligence-gathering following a complaint filed by the victim.
The suspect is currently being processed and will soon be arraigned in court.
According to the DCI, the ordeal began when Gachara approached the victim under the guise of being a customer seeking a bulk order of 20 sacks of charcoal.
The deal appeared genuine, and the unsuspecting trader rushed to mobilize suppliers to meet the demand.
Investigations reveal that this “order” was nothing more than a ploy to lure the businessman into a trap.
Once the charcoal was ready, the vendor was confronted by assailants driving a numberless Toyota Prado SUV.
He was forced into the vehicle, where he was assaulted and threatened with a gun.
At gunpoint, the gang demanded the victim’s Equitel mobile money PIN.
The terrified trader complied, and within minutes, Sh200,000 was withdrawn from his account.
The gang then pushed him out of the SUV, abandoning him on the roadside.
One of the accomplices, a woman armed with a pistol, held him at gunpoint as the Prado sped away.
She was later picked up by a waiting red motorcycle and disappeared into Mukurweini town.
The shaken trader reported the ordeal to Mukurweini police, providing critical leads that helped detectives trace the suspects.
Using forensic intelligence and tracking tools, detectives managed to locate and arrest Gachara.
Police say the arrest is a breakthrough but emphasized that other accomplices remain at large.
Law enforcement believes the robbery gang is part of a wider criminal network operating in Nyeri and neighboring counties.
“This arrest is a major step forward, but our pursuit of the other suspects is ongoing,” a senior DCI officer said.
He urged members of the public to assist with information that could lead to more arrests.
The incident has raised alarm among traders in Nyeri, many of whom operate cash-heavy businesses.
Residents say the Mukurweini gunpoint robbery reflects the vulnerability of small-scale traders who handle large transactions daily.
One charcoal dealer said such robberies erode trust in legitimate trade.
“We are hardworking people trying to survive, but criminals are exploiting our desperation for sales,” he said.
Local business owners are now demanding greater police presence and protection during market days.
The DCI has since urged Kenyans to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities.
Citizens can share information anonymously through the toll-free hotline 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp at 0709 570 000.
The directorate has assured that all tips will be treated with strict confidentiality.
Meanwhile, the victim is still recovering from the ordeal and has appealed for justice.
He described the moment he thought his life was about to end as he stared down the barrel of a gun.
“All I wanted was to supply charcoal and earn a living for my family,” he said.
“Instead, I was beaten, robbed, and left in the middle of the road.”
“I thank God I survived, and I hope those responsible are punished.”
Experts warn that crimes like the Nyeri robbery not only traumatize individuals but also affect the local economy.
Fear of violent crime discourages traders from engaging in new deals and slows economic activity in rural towns.
Community leaders are calling for more police patrols and safer digital payment systems to protect traders.
They also recommend sensitization programs on fraud prevention and mobile banking security.
As for Gachara, detectives continue to interrogate him as they follow leads on his accomplices.
Police believe that with public cooperation, the Mukurweini robbery suspects will soon be brought to justice.
This case has once again underscored the need for vigilance by both traders and law enforcement in fighting crime.
While robbery remains a challenge, the arrest of the suspect has given hope that justice will eventually prevail.
